'Let's Share Our Story'

The Gratiaen Trust’s mandate to support Sri Lankan creative writers in English has expanded over the course of the Trust’s history. In addition to conducting activities to cultivate, deepen and develop the creative writing practice, craft and nurture the creative network of Sri Lankan artists, the Gratiaen Trust also takes a keen interest in nurturing the youth network of burgeoning writers.

This October, the Trust hosted “Let’s Share Our Story”- a workshop for budding young writers and enthusiasts through interactive and creative story telling . The one day workshop was held on 30th October 2022, 9.30 am onwards targeted to age group of 10 and above with close to 20 participants . The workshop was conducted by Mr. Chalana Wijesuriya; a theatre practitioner and teacher of drama who has experience working with children and young adults as the drama teacher/ director for schools such as Visakha Vidyalaya and Elizabeth Moir School. The workshop was predominantly in English, but will use Sinhala and Tamil for communication and translation purposes. The structure of the workshop was interactive story building with group work and performances of the final story product.

The objective of the sessions with Mr. Wijesuriya would be for the participants to:

  • To learn and understand the process and structure of writing a story

  • To exercise their creativity through building and developing their own stories

  • To cultivate teamwork and peer reviews with the other participants through story sharing

  • To enhance their performative skills and build confidence.
